Strategies For
Bing Maps Discontinuation
On Friday May 31, 2024, Microsoft announced that their Bing Maps for Enterprise mapping platform would be discontinued per the following schedule: As of June 30, 2024, no new customer purchases of the Bing Maps for Enterprise Mapping Platform can be made directly through Microsoft. Only accredited resellers like OnTerra Systems can sell Bing Maps. Technical support for the Bing Maps for Enterprise Mapping Platform will continue to June 30, 2028, after which customers will no longer be able to use any of the Bing Maps for Enterprise services and the Bing Maps for Enterprises platform will be retired.
Long-term Bing Maps Migration Strategy Needed For All Bing Maps For Enterprises Mapping Platform Users
So, what does this news from Microsoft mean?
After June 30, 2024, Microsoft will no longer directly sign new contracts for Bing Maps. However, customers can still purchase and use Bing Maps from a Bing Maps reseller like OnTerra Systems, and customers can continue to maximize the value of using Bing Maps for up to 4 years, up into mid 2028.
Then, after June 30, 2028, Microsoft will effectively turn off the services and the Bing Maps API will not work. So, customers can still use most Bing Maps services for 4 more years, including the Bing Maps V8 Map Control, Geocoding, and Routing. There’s still plenty of time to take advantage of the power of Bing Maps.
However, it’s imperative that Bing Maps users should be working on a long-term migration plan.
